31 JAN 1942
The Sealion was securely moored to the assigned pier in Fremantle, Western Australia. The crew was busy securing the boat before refit and replenishment. As these tasks were being completed, Lt Levay reappeared, after having left the boat when the first line was secured, with a sailor and seabags filled with uniforms and toiletries for the officers and crew. The bags were brought on board with distribution managed by Ensign Trujillo and Chief of the Boat Orr.
Lt Levay was left in charge of the boat while LTCDR Crabtree headed over to SUBRON headquarters. Lt(jg) Shoemaker was sent to Personnel for quartering of the officers and crew.
“I thought it would be cooler,” LTCDR Crabtree mused to no one in particular. “I can live with this.”
Reaching headquarters, LTCDR Crabtree requested the duty officer to report in, and to submit their patrol log. Once the formalities were concluded, the duty officer provided directions LTCDR Crabtree to the BOQ, where he could shower, and requisition a clean change of uniform.
Back at the Sealion, LTCDR Crabtree arrived simultaneously with Lt(jg) Shoemaker. “Well?” enquired the commander. “First and second watches will head over to the BEQ shortly. Waiting for a couple of buses.” “Third watch will have a hot meal delivered in about an hour. Meanwhile, coffee and donuts will arrive for them with the buses.” “Good work, ‘Abe’.” “Yes sir.” “Head over to the BOQ and get yourself cleaned up, and fed.” ‘Sir.”
Commander Crabtree found Lt Levay in the Con gathering up and securing all charts and logs. “Don’t want to lose these, sir.” “Thanks. Why don’t you head over to the BOQ with ‘Abe’. Get cleaned up and get something to eat. Send ‘Abe’ back in about an hour to relieve Andrew and me.” “Aye, sir.”
“Golden!” A few moments later Yeoman Juelz Golden appeared at the captain’s quarters. “Sir?” As Yeoman Golden arrived, LTCDR Crabtree was placing his personal log and other papers and binders into a briefcase. “Take these to the BOQ and have place them in my quarters. Get yourself something to eat and get settled in at the BEQ. Be back here at 0800.” “Aye, sir.”
Herb Crabtree got up from his desk and headed out into the boat. He worked his way up to the forward torpedo room. He took a good look around the compartment and began to make mental notes on what needed to be done. He then worked his way aft until he finally reached the aft torpedo room. He had compiled a long list. He would compare his notes with Chief of the Boat Orr in the morning. They would then convey them to the yard chief when they handed Sealion over for repairs and refit.
Commander Crabtree returned to his quarters, put a few personal items into a bag, and headed to the tower. Third watch’s coffee and food had arrived to a most grateful group of men.
“Chief Bloom.” Answering from the deck below, “Yes, sir?” “Take an hour for you and your men to relax. Then go about your business. Lt Shoemaker will be here soon, as duty officer.” “Aye, sir. Thank you, sir.”
“Here, sir,” as ship’s cook Bond held out a coffee and a donut to Commander Crabtree. “Thank you, Travis.”
Herb Crabtree was about halfway through his coffee, and untouched donuts when Lt Shoemaker reported in. “Here for the watch, sir.” “Very good. The first watch will come in a split shift at 0000 Hours and 0400 hours. I expect the yard to take ‘her’ sometime tomorrow morning.” “Yes, sir.” “Should be a quiet night, ‘Abe’.” “Thank you, sir. Good night.”
