U-598 enters the harbor at La Rochelle, dmage to the hull and no pennants flying form the periscope.

Narrative:
1 Jul 1942, Wilhelmshaven ObLtzS Stephan Teufel stands on the bridge of U-598. A few short months ago he was 1WO on another boat. Now he is in command. He hopes his nervousness isn’t obvious to those around him. The voice of 1WO LtzS Adelmar Pabst intrudes on Stephan’s thoughts. “All is ready, Herr Kaleun.”
“Let us begin,” Stephan smiles back, hoping he exudes confidence. While nervous, Stephan is also excited at the prospect of proving himself.
Apparently Stephan’s excitement is more obvious than his nervousness as Adelmar returns the smile with an enthusiastic, “Yes, Herr Kaleun!” The 1WO then issues the orders to get U-598 underway as the dockside well-wishers join in a rousing cheer.
7 Jul 1942, Atlantic ObLtzS Stephan Teufel comes onto the bridge. “Where?” is all he says.
LtzS Adlemar Pabst hands his Kommandant the binoculars and points. Raising the glasses, Stephan brings them into focus an what appears to be multiple leafless three trunks rising out of the dark Atlantic waters. A feral grin forms on Teufel’s lips. Mindful of his former Kapitan’s admonition that, “Ther is no value in dying for the Fatherland,” and that the bulk of his torpedoes are the stream driven models which leave tell-tale trails back to their origin, Stephan makes the decision to shadow the convoy and attack after dark. Unfortunately for U-598, but to the benefit of the sailors on untold merchantmen, U-598 loses the convoy.
10 Jul 1943, Atlantic This time there is no reason to delay the attack, the cover of darkness will hide the G7a’s tracks. ObLtzS Stephan Teufel, arms draped over the periscope handles focuses on two large freighters in the near column of the convoy. He orders two eels fired at each. A few minutes later, the deadly torpedoes are streaking toward their targets. Three Explosions follow.
When Stephan looks at his hydrophone operator, Funkobergefreiter Kyler Hoffman shakes his head, indicating the lack of sounds of a ship breaking up. His eyes going wide, Hoffman then says, “High speed screws!” indicating the approach of the convoy’s escorts.
While no one is injured in the resulting waserbombing, the #1 Diesel is knocked of its mount. In an effort to escape further detection, Teufel orders the Boat deep. While the ploy works, it also damages the hull.
Afterward, Lt (Ing) Sigi Berger informs Stephan that the #1 Diesel mounts are warped and the engine cannot be remounted. With the diesel out of service, Teufel has no choice but to abort the patrol.
22 Jul 1942, La Rochelle As U-598 approaches the pier ObLtzS Stephan Teufel does not share the enthusiasm of those on the dock greeting their arrival. All he feels is a sense of inadequacy after the failure of his first patrol in command.

It was a fantastic way to end my service on U-39. This patrol was successful, although less productive than our previous ones. Our journey to the coast of North America and back was long and lonely, but we had a highly successful mission when we reached the east coast. During our patrol off the coast of the USA and Canada, we encountered two convoys and two unescorted ships. We successfully sank four ships, though we didn't manage to hit one. Three ships escaped as we saved our torpedoes for potential future encounters. List of engagements: Tanker, 11,300 MT, sunken by JUN 21st, 1942 Large Freighter, 7,200 MT, sunken by JUN 21st, 1942 Two Small Freighters, 1,600 MT and 1,300MT respectfully, not engaged by JUN 21st, 1942 Tanker, 5,300 MT, sunken by JUN 29th, 1942 Large Freighter, 5,200 MT, not engaged by JUN 29th, 1942 Tanker, 8,200 MT, sunken by JUL 2nd, 1942 Small Freighter, 3,400 MT, was missed by a fired torpedo and was lost by U-39 for re-engagement due to weather by JUL 3rd, 1942 This report includes a detailed technical report by chief engineer Obermaat Schacht on the condition of the U-39. The shortened version is as follows:
- The submarine's hull was slightly damaged by depth charges (1 hull damage) - Diesel engine two was slightly damaged but repaired in the field. Revision maintenance is required. - Depth charges destroyed the hull deck and 3.7cm Flak. At the end of my report, I thank all the first and second officers, Oberleutnent zur See Björn Maibaum and Leutnent zur See Dirk Roth, for their excellent service to the Fatherland. Throughout our joint services, they have excelled beyond expectations, and their promotion to commander and the first officer of U-39 is more than deserved. Signed by: U-39 Kommandant, Korvetten-Kapitän Luka Borchers
